Role
PhD student

Since April 2024, Nout has been a researcher-in-training at the Brain Research and Innovation Centre (BRAIC). He combines his psychiatric training at UMC Utrecht with a PhD track. His research is partly funded by Bedrocan, the company that cultivates medicinal cannabis for the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport.
In his PhD research, Nout focuses on investigating the therapeutic effects and side effects of medicinal cannabis in mental health conditions. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the research community in using cannabis for therapeutic purposes. Although some studies suggest that certain symptoms can be alleviated with medical cannabis treatment, these studies often have methodological shortcomings, such as small sample sizes. Therefore, Nout focuses on gathering more research data on the efficacy and safety of medicinal cannabis in treating mental health conditions.
